Operator standard work is not written by industrial engineers in offices.

It is co-created with the people who do the work, on the floor, in real time.

We use a structured 6-step method.

  • Step 1 — Observe the current best-performing operator over multiple cycles. Capture sequence, time per element, walking distance and quality call-outs.
  • Step 2 — Document the task using a standard 1-page format: task sequence, takt time, key quality points, safety, photos.
  • Step 3 — Validate with the team. Run a 1–2 week pilot on a single line or shift. Adjust based on operator feedback before locking.
  • Step 4 — Train all operators on the standard. Use Training Within Industry (TWI) Job Instruction or equivalent — not classroom slides.
  • Step 5 — Make the standard visible at the workstation. Laminated, color-coded, accessible without leaving the work area.
  • Step 6 — Audit weekly. Update the standard the same day any confirmed improvement is approved. The standard is a living document, not a museum piece.
